He competed with Gianluigi Buffon (Italy, Juventus) and Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona) as the three nominees for the 2016/17 UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award.
Lieke Martens, the Netherlands forward who this summer swapped Rosengård for Barcelona and lifted the UEFA Women's EURO 2017 on home turf, has won the UEFA Women's Player of the Year Award after beating fellow nominees Pernille Harder (Denmark, Linköping and Wolfsburg) and Dzsenifer Marozsán (Germany, Lyon) for the award.
