Carlos Carvalhal story is an inspiring one..... get sacked on Christmas eve and get new job after Christmas.

The Portuguese boss, will succeeds the sacked Paul Clement, has been given the job until the end of the season with the option of an extension. Clement was dismissed as Swansea boss earlier this month after a run of nine defeats in 11 matches left them bottom of the Premier League, with midfielder Leon Britton overseeing the last two games in caretaker charge.

The Welsh club have now turned to Portuguese boss Carvalha 52-year-old was sacked by Sheffield Wednesday on Christmas Eve but has long drawn interest from Swansea, who first considered him when Garry Monk left two years ago. He has twice led Owls (Sheffield Wednesday) into Championship play-offs.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said on the club's official website about the appointment: "We felt we needed to get the managerial situation resolved as soon as possible and while the timing is not always perfect, we can look forward to the second half of the campaign with renewed optimism.

"Carlos' time at Sheffield Wednesday, which included securing two consecutive play-off places, highlighted that he has great character and personality to lead the squad and the football club, which is vital at such a crucial time.

"He has built up a lot of experience over the years which will ensure the team is structured and organised.

"He is driven and ambitious and while he has a big challenge ahead of him, I know he will tackle it without fear."

Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a world record transfer fee for a defender at £75million and handed him shirt No 4. He is now the most expensive defender in the world right now beating Mancheter City's Kyle Walker.

The former Celtic and Groningen defender will be joining Liverpool from 1st January, 2018 when the January transfer window opens after signing a contract worth more than £180,000 per week that will run until June 2023. Van Dijk had a medical on the south coast on Wednesday, with Southampton's consent, after the two clubs agreed on the fee.
