Tobi Amusan: The World 100m hurdles Champions!

Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan simply known as Tobi Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete, She specializes in the 100 metres hurdles but she also participated in long jump, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 100 m, 200m etc. for indoor and outdoor competition.

She is the last child of three siblings and she was born in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria on April 23, 1997. She attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode and started her track and fields career from a local competition where came out top.. taking first position. She continued in that regards competing different local competitions winning medals and medals..

Tobi showed a lot of athletic potential when she won silver medal at the 2013 African Youth Championship hosted in Warri, Nigeria. She has been moving in upward direction ever since in the track and fields. In 2015, at the Addis Ababa African Junior Athletics Championships, she won gold in 100 metres hurdles before going on to win gold again in the same year at her very first All-Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

She had her education at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) through scholarship in 2016, even as a freshman Tobi became the second athlete for the university to be named C-USA Female Track athlete of the Year since UTEP joined C-USA, where she won gold medals in both the 100m H and 200m while also got silver medal in the long jump C-USA Championships. She made it to the 100m H semi-finals at the Rio Olympics. Then, in 2017. She ran her best time and UTEP record then of 12.63s in the 100m H and a runner-up in the 200 metres. Also, at NCAA Outdoor Championships, she got personal Best time of 12.57s in the 100m H.

In 2018, Tobi ran a personal best of 7.89s in the 60m H and went on to represent Nigeria at the World Indoor Championships, Birmingham, where got to final in the 60m H. In the same year, at the Commonwealth Games in Australia; She won the race by a clear metres ahead of Danielle Williams and went on claimed bronze medal in the 4x100m relay with Team Nigeria which includes the like of Blessing Okagbare, Rosemary Chukwuma and Joy Udo-Gabriel. In African Championships in Asaba, Nigeria, Tobi claimed gold medals in both 100m H and 4x100m relay with the Team Nigeria.

2019 and 2021 were another years. In 2019, she ran 12.49s in final with .01 short of her personal best she got in the qualifying rounds of the 100m H at the World Championships, Doha - Qatar. In Rabat, Morocco for the All Africa Games, where she won gold in 100m H. Then, 2021 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she ran 12.60s to end in the fourth placed. The same year ran and won a Diamond League trophy with a time of 12.42s at the Diamond League in Zurich becoming the Nigeria to go home with a trophy.

                                           Tobi set a new World record in 100m hurdles

First, at the 2022 Diamond League in Paris, winning with an Africa record with a time of 12.41s. Tobi went on to win gold in the 100m H at the African Championships in Mauritius with a time of 12.57s and well won gold in the relay of the 4x100m.

Tobi at the 2022 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA ran to break a record of 2016 by Kendra Harrison at the semi-final stage with a time 12.12s to set a new world record. 



Within the space of few hours on the same night, she bested her time once again and set a new world record (WR) to win the gold medal with a time of 12.06s ahead of Olympic gold medallist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico in Third position and Brittany Anderson from Jamaica in Second position.


Tobi is the fastest woman in 100m hurdles in the world and the first Nigerian to win gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. She sings the Nigerian national anthem passionately at the presentation of the award.. Congratulations Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan...
