45 Years EPL Wait Over As Huddersfield Got Last Spot

Huddersfield Town are playoff Champions after defeating Jaap Stam's Reading in dramatic style at Wembley via penalties. The Terriers were as good as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United in the 1920s, winning three back-to-back titles. Such a feat was as difficult then as it is now but, since their last game in the top flight in 1972, they have been a forgotten club. In 2003-04 they were fighting in the fourth tier, with future Premier League football a laughable prospect.

Coached by former assistant coach at Dortmund, David Wagner, who joined the club 2015 led Huddersfield to historic promotion, with just one goal (own-goal) in the playoff got the last spot through penalties 4 - 3 against Reading after 120 minutes of grit and determination football

In leading Huddersfield to the Premier League, the Town boss became only the 6th non-British or Irish boss to achieve promotion to the top flight. Huddersfield were marginally better over the course of the game and this historic effort is that they won their fourth play-off final in five after coming from as low as League Two to play in the Premier League with some of their players are loaned from top Premier League clubs

Wagner says “What happened is an unbelievable story – it’s a fairytale.”
