FIFA AWARDS: Ronaldo Named Best Player In The World

The year 2016 will always be remembered as the best for Cristiano Ronaldo. It is a staggering year for him reaching the pinnacle on three fronts; for club, for country and for himself. He was crowned UEFA Champions for both Portugal and Real Madrid with successful outing in UEFA Champions League and European Champions 2016 hosted by France. He got the Ballon d'Or award in December for the fourth time and as well won the Club World Cup in far East, Japan scoring hat-trick in the finals. Yesterday, adding the FIFA World best player to all these means that he was above everyone else in 2016. Congratulations Cristiano Ronaldo!

Ronaldo beating Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to the FIFA award for the best player of the year 2016, where he scored 59 goals through the year, Messi scored 55 goals. He said: "It's a great feeling, as I mentioned many times last year was a dream year, no doubt about that," the striker said at the ceremony shortly before receiving the prize.

"Real Madrid win the Champions League and the national team won the Euros for the first time in history. Unbelievable season. I'm so proud and happy.

"I have to say thank you to my team-mates of Real Madrid, and team-mates of Portugal and the coaches. It was an amazing year."

Ronaldo also scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final, as Real Madrid defeated Griezmann’s Atletico at San Siro in Milan, and was rewarded with a sweeter new deal until 2021.

The 31-year-old’s incredible year – which also saw him named the world’s highest paid sports player.

Claudio Ranieri, Leicester City's coach won the best coach of the year, 2016 beating Portugal's coach Fernando Santos and Real Madrid's coach Zinedine Zidane. Ranieri, 64 years-old Italian guided the Foxes to claimed the first top-flight title in their 132-year history in his return to English Premier League and first season with Leicester City. They are also currently in the knockout stages of UEFA Champions League in their first season after topping the group stage.

The FIFA Fair Play Award recognises exemplary behaviour that promotes the spirit of fair play and compassion on and off the field. Colombian side Atletico Nacional, Chapecoense’s planned opponents in the continental final, in a remarkable display of humility, sent a request to CONMEBOL to award Chapecoense the title, with the South American governing body duly obliging.

Fans of the clubs shared their grief, and mourned the lives of those lost, together, with thousands of Aletico Nacional supporters attending the stadium at the planned kick-off time of the final’s first leg, in tribute to those that could not be there to play the fixture. The FIFA Fair Play Award for 2016 goes to Atletico Nacional, for their moving gesture. The award was accepted on stage in Zurich on 9 January 2017 by Dr Carlos de La Cuesta.

Having been involved in each of Germany’s eight European and two FIFA Women’s World Cup™ wins as either a player, assistant coach, or head coach, Silvia Neid’s biography reads like a never-ending list of triumphs. She capped off this remarkable record in 2016 by leading her country to their first gold medal at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Brazil.
