Cristiano Ronaldo has been named best player in the world for 2016 by Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. He was exceptional in 2016 by winning all the major trophies for club and country as well as individual awards.
Mark Clattenburg, Premier League referee was named the best referee in the world following his exploit in 2016 where he took charge of both the Champions League final where Real Madrid defeated arch-rival Atletico Madrid and the Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France. He also took charge of the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace.
Aside from his involvement at showpiece fixtures, Clattenburg also demonstrated his exceptional ability to control any game, no matter the circumstance. He will also be remember that he was the referee in charge when Croatian hooligans threw flares onto the pitch in the match between the Czech Republic and Croatia at Euro 2016. Clattenburg acted swiftly to move the players away from the burning flares and suspended the game for several minutes.
Other notable victors at the Globe Soccer Awards included Fernando Santos, who was named coach of the year after leading Portugal to victory at Euro 2016.
Real Madrid were named club of the year after they won the Champions League, and their president Florentino Perez was named president of the year.
Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery was also presented with a special award by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The Globe Soccer Awards are held in Dubai over December 27 and 28.
